(Jan 28, 2012) The US Women’s National Team is on its way to London for the 2012 Summer Olympics this year after qualifying in Vancouver yesterday. Their 3-0 victory over Costa Rica secured a berth in the Olympic draw vs. the best teams in the world. Panther alum Kelley O’Hara got her 2nd start of the tournament – this time at right back – and played the full 90. Against Guatemala in the second game of the tourney, Kelley started at left back and recorded three assists. There were some dicey moments in the game as Costa Rica had a breakaway stoned by Hope Solo and another opportunity when a shot clanged off the top left corner post and out. But Solo proved why she’s the greatest keeper in the women's game by tallying her 4th straight clean sheet of the tournament. The US women have outscored their opponents 31-0 thus far. Goals by Tobin Heath, Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan sealed the deal and send the American team to compete for Olympic gold this summer. Next on the docket is Canada and their world-class striker, Christine Sinclair, on Monday. Both Canada and the US will represent the CONCACAF region at the Olympics since both finalists qualify. Props to Kelley and the USWNT and good luck vs. Canada in the Finals! [R. Woodhead] [Photos: J. Hayward]
